Sophie Mallinson

Public Communications Specialist

Sophie Mallinson joined the State Climate Office as a communications specialist in October 2024. Her position is shared with NC State’s Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. In her role, Sophie will help highlight the small and large-scale impacts of the SCO through multimedia feature stories, such as how ECONet is utilized by farmers. She aims to ensure such efforts receive recognition from the university and the larger state.

Sophie grew up in Greenville, N.C. and earned her B.A. in Media and Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There she helped develop a documentary with PBS-NC and spent five years working in science education at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. After graduating, Sophie worked as an environmental reporter for North Carolina Public Radio, WUNC. She is passionate about ensuring scientific research is accessible, approachable and exciting for the general public.”
