FAQs

What do volunteers do?
Volunteers are needed as Drivers and Navigators (to help steer drivers), Bicyclists, and Walkers. Volunteers will be assigned to a pre-planned route in Raleigh and/or Durham which will be driven, biked, or walked during three separate one-hour periods throughout the campaign day. Route times will be 6-7 a.m., 3-4 p.m., and 7-8 p.m. Volunteers may sign up for just one, two, or all three shifts!

How is data collected?
Driving and biking volunteers will be given a sensor which mounts to a car or bike, and walking volunteers will be given a handheld sensor. While traveling the route, the sensor will record the ambient temperature, humidity, and GPS location every one second. After completing their route, volunteers will return the sensor back to the organizers. The collected data will be compiled into a detailed temperature map of Raleigh and Durham.

Are there any requirements as a volunteer?
All volunteers will be required to sign a liability release waiver. Volunteers also need to participate in a virtual volunteer orientation before the date of the campaign. Drivers will need a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and auto insurance. Bikers will need a bicycle.

When are we conducting the campaign?
To collect the most meaningful data, the campaign needs to take place on a hot, clear day. Historical weather patterns tell us that we have the best chance of seeing these optimal conditions in Raleigh and Durham in late June to July. Our campaign date has been set for July 23rd!

Because we have to wait for the heat—and the fact that summer is such a busy time—we need to assemble an “on-call” roster of drivers, navigators, bikers, and walkers to cover the campaign day. Volunteers will be contacted regarding the next steps in preparing for the campaign.
