Diversity Statement
Diverse perspectives deepen our understanding and help us innovate in powerful ways. We welcome participants, students, and collaborators regardless of race, religion, gender identification, sexual orientation, age, or disability status.
We recognize the lack of diversity in climate science, broadly and even within our own group, and the role we must play to enact systemic change from within. By acknowledging our biases, listening to our stakeholders, and deliberately seeking out audiences underserved by climate science and underrepresented in our field, we aim to better serve North Carolina’s diverse population.
We are actively working to foster an inclusive environment that promotes opportunities for participation by underrepresented and marginalized groups. A list of our current activities and initiatives are below.
- Safety guidelines to keep our ECONet staff safe while they are out working in the lab and field
- Staff training on topics including implicit bias
- Participation on the NC State University College of Sciences Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Promoting diverse candidate pools and addressing sources of bias during job recruitment

This foundation empowers us to equally serve all citizens of North Carolina, to inform their climate needs and vulnerabilities, and to broaden our collective knowledge of climate and its impacts. We do this through our mission areas of extension, education, and research.
