Jared is the associate director of the North Carolina State Climate Office. He was born and
raised in Rocky Mount, NC and witnessed the historical flooding and damage from Hurricane
Floyd in 1999. At the time, he was studying meteorology at NCSU and continued his studies as
a graduate student at NCSU to better understand weather extremes, climate variability, and
climate change. Jared has a PhD. and M.S. in Atmospheric Science from NCSU, as well as B.S. in
both Meteorology and Marine Sciences from NCSU.

Dr. Bowden’s expertise is in the application of atmospheric models, especially improving the
accuracy of regional climate models used to produce high-resolution climate change
projections. He has developed high-resolution climate change projections for various parts of
the world including the Contiguous US, US Caribbean, and Africa. Data from these simulations
have supported important climate assessments. He is a co-author on the 4 th and 5 th National
Climate Assessment and Puerto Rico’s State of the Climate Report. His research problems are
informed by closely listening to stakeholders and learning about their problems and needs. He
has worked closely with scientists in various disciplines as well as practitioners, including those
in hydrology, engineering, ecology, air quality, and epidemiology. Dr. Bowden also enjoys
communicating climate science with a goal to enhance recovery, build resilience, and adapt to
climate variability and change, especially extreme weather events.

Prior to joining the State Climate Office, Jared served as a Senior Research Scholar in the
Applied Ecology Department at NCSU and as a Research Assistant Professor at UNC Chapel Hill.
He is also a former National Research Council Postdoc that worked closely with scientists at the
US Environmental Protection Agency.
