Snow, sleet, and freezing rain struck North Carolina early on the 13th and brought hazardous driving conditions to western and central portions of the state. Snow along with sleet and freezing rain coated trees and transmission lines with ice and glaze. This brought power and telephone failure to most counties in the Mountains, Piedmont, and western portions of the Coastal Plain. Many communities were without electricity for 12 to 24 hours. Telephone service was disrupted with many telephones still out on the 14th. Trees and shrubs were heavily damaged. Wind added to the damage causing heavily ice coated branches and trees to fall on transmission lines. Most businesses were at a standstill on the 13th and schools closed on Monday the 15th. Many minor injuries and accidents were caused by slippery walks and roads. | |||
